Health insurance for the struggling Artist
Living as an artist in NYC can be quite challenging, and oftentimes, a seemingly insurmountable feat. The cost of living is high enough that when you're on a budget, the idea of health insurance all too often gets put on the back burner. And then you just pray that you never need it... Nobody likes going to the doctor, but Health Insurance is very important indeed, and often gets neglected because we just can't afford it, or perhaps don't know that we have options. However, if you are living with a low income, or as an artist really trying to make ends meet and stay afloat-I urge you to look into Health Plus. (Family Health Plus, Health Plus/Medicaid). If you are working part-time at a job that doesn't offer health insurance, or if you have jobs based on your career (actor, dancer, writer, freelance), you might find that you actually might qualify for this type of health care. At no expense to you. Best thing to do is to call an office near you (http://www.healthplus-ny.org/en/407_ENG_HTML.html), speak to a representative and make an appointment with all the necessary information to process an application. I personally had to apply under very unique circumstances than the norm. Being that the majority of my income at the time of my application was inconsistent and all from different employers, I had to gather pay stubs for the last couple of months of work and show proof (amongst other things). The process for approval can take up to six months and, as with all city programs, it's in your best interest to stay on top of it. Once approved, your coverage is good for a year, but they will be sending you the application for re-approval for the following year at least three months early (the city don't mess around folks!) All and all worth it in the end knowing that you're covered (this includes dental cleanings and eye exams as well). Because if we're sick, we can't work. And that just stinks. |
